A Personal Note:
For the Kids...
In 2016, Walter and I were asked to teach a dance class at South Union Baptist Church. Up until that point, we had talked about having a kid's class, but we decided to wait because we were still trying to build our adult classes. But since God had other plans, we accepted the offer.
Walter and I taught the first class together, but because of his work schedule, I had to teach most of the classes on my own. I was a little nervous about teaching the class by myself (lol...I almost bailed on the kids). But my love for the kids won out, so I kept teaching. And before I knew it, the kids kept coming too. LOL...even the adults kept coming. In fact, I think two adults, Linda Taylor and Felicia Hadnott-Wallace, had more fun in the classes than the kids did.
The classes started in January, and just 3 months later the kids had their first recital on Mother's Day, and a couple of weeks later they competed in their 1st dance competition at the International Swing Dance Championships. The kids took home 2nd and 3rd place trophies. Walter and I were so proud of them!
To this day, some of the original TAOK kids are still with us; still dancing and still winning awards.
Whenever we think about canceling the kids class, we think of Chase Lightfoot. We remember the imprint he placed on our hearts. Chase departed this earth at just 16 yrs old, but he left his light with us. If only I could hear him sing "Exceptional" just one more time...
This dance belongs to Chase and all the beautiful kids that will come after him. We owe it to them to keep Hou2Step alive.
